Does Opening Windows Reduce Humidity? Only on One Condition

Your home feels damp, so you do the obvious thing: open the windows. Sometimes it works like a charm. Sometimes, an hour later, the place is stickier than before and you’re left wondering what went wrong. Both outcomes are real physics — and a single number decides which one you get.

Does opening windows reduce humidity?

Yes — but only if the outdoor air contains less water than your indoor air in absolute terms, in grams per cubic metre, not in percent. Ventilation is a swap: your air goes out, outdoor air comes in. If the incoming air carries fewer grams of water per m³, the swap dries your home. If it carries more, you’re literally pumping water in through the window. The humidity percentage in your weather app cannot tell you which case you’re in, because that percentage depends on temperature.

Why can 90% outside be drier than 60% inside?

Because relative humidity measures how full the air is, not how much water it holds — and cold air can hold very little. Winter air at 5 °C and a scary-looking 90% RH carries only about 6 g/m³ of water. Your living room at 20 °C and 60% holds about 10 g/m³. Open up and water flows out: the “90% humid” air dries your flat. Now flip it: a hot afternoon at 30 °C and an innocent-looking 50% RH carries about 15 g/m³ — half again more than your 10. When does airing actually dry your home?

It depends almost entirely on the season, because temperature sets how much water outdoor air can carry:

  • Winter: airing dries, almost always. Cold air is water-poor even at high RH — 5 °C / 90% ≈ 6 g/m³. Short, wide-open bursts dry the home for pennies of heat; see does airing in winter waste heat.
  • Hot summer afternoon: airing often humidifies. 30 °C / 50% ≈ 15 g/m³, more water than most homes hold — despite the low percentage. That’s the afternoon dry air trap, and it brings heat in as a bonus.
  • Mid-season, mild days, after rain: it genuinely depends. Outdoor and indoor water contents are close, and only comparing the two numbers tells you which way the swap goes.

Why did opening the window make it worse?

Because the air you let in held more water than the air you kicked out. It didn’t feel humid on arrival — warm air rarely does — but as it cooled to room temperature, its relative humidity climbed, the room turned clammy, and the extra grams headed for your coldest surfaces as condensation. “I opened up and it got worse” isn’t bad luck; it’s the reliable result of ventilating when outside is wetter in g/m³ than inside.

How do you know before you open?

Compare the water content on both sides of the window, not the percentages. The working rule: open only when outdoor absolute humidity is below indoor absolute humidity — equivalently, when the outdoor dew point is below your indoor one. Dew point is handy because many weather services publish it directly: indoor dew point 12 °C, outdoor 16 °C? Keep shut. If outside is wetter, closing is not giving up — it’s waiting for the drier window that reliably comes: early morning in summer, almost any time in winter.
