Drying Laundry Indoors Without the Mold
No garden, no dryer, rain outside: the drying rack goes up in the living room. Here’s the thing nobody mentions — every drop of water leaving your clothes goes somewhere, and that somewhere is your air, your windows, and eventually the cold corner of your bedroom wall. Drying indoors isn’t the problem. Drying indoors without a plan is.
Your laundry is a bucket of water
A freshly spun load of laundry still holds roughly one to two litres of water. All of it will evaporate into the room — that’s what “drying” means. For scale, that single rack can release as much vapour as several hot showers, spread over a day.

Pick one room and close the door
The instinct is to dry laundry in the warm living room “because warm air dries faster”. Warm air does dry faster — but the moisture then spreads through your entire home, loading every room’s air and every cold surface.
The better strategy is containment:
- Choose one room — ideally with a window, ideally not the bedroom where you sleep that night.
- Close the door. Moisture stays in one place instead of migrating to every cold wall in the house.
- Ventilate that room deliberately while the laundry dries: window open or ajar-with-purpose, and door shut so the humid air exits outdoors, not inland.
A slightly cooler room with an open window usually beats a warm sealed room. Drying speed depends on how fast moist air is replaced, not just on temperature — a rack in a draft dries faster than a rack in a warm still room.
Air in bursts, not trickles
While a load dries, the room’s air saturates within hours. The fix is the same as ever: short, wide-open airing — Stoßlüften — every few hours if you can, swapping the humid air without cooling walls and furniture.
In cold weather this works brilliantly, because winter air is very dry in absolute terms; each burst carries a surprising load of water out. In muggy weather, check before you open: if the outdoor air carries more water per cubic metre than your indoor air, opening the window brings water in, whatever the forecast’s RH says. That’s the classic relative-humidity trap.

Drying on radiators deserves its own warning: it feels efficient, but it converts your heating directly into vapour production in your most-lived-in rooms, and often in the evening — right when windows stay closed and walls cool down.
If a room smells musty or the window drips every laundry day, that’s the balance sheet telling you the water in exceeded the water out. More airing, better containment, or a dehumidifier as a last resort — in that order.
