Ideal Indoor Humidity: What 40–60% Really Means
Everyone quotes the same target: keep indoor humidity roughly between 40 and 60%. Fewer people can say what that percentage actually measures — and the surprise is that the same air can read 55% in the evening and 38% the next morning without gaining or losing a single drop of water.
A percentage of what, exactly?
Relative humidity is not an amount of water. It says how full the air is relative to what it could hold at its current temperature — and warm air can hold far more water than cold air. Heat a room and the RH drops; let it cool overnight and the RH climbs. The water content did not change; the container did.
A concrete example, straight from the physics: air at 20 °C and 50% RH carries roughly 8.7 g of water per cubic metre. Warm that same air to 25 °C and it reads about 38% RH. Why 40–60% is still a useful band
So why does everyone recommend a range defined in such a shifty unit? Because the things RH governs really do happen at your room’s temperature:
- Below roughly 40%: dry throat and eyes, irritated airways, static shocks, cracking wood. Common in winter, when cold outdoor air is heated up and its RH collapses.
- Above roughly 60%: the air feels heavy, drying anything takes forever, dust mites thrive, and cold spots slide toward condensation.
The mold threshold is sneakier than the room average suggests. Air at a comfortable 55% in the middle of the room is much closer to saturation against a cold exterior wall or behind a wardrobe. Reading your hygrometer without fooling yourself
A cheap hygrometer is genuinely useful — if you interpret it with temperature in mind:

The habit to build: never react to the percentage alone. Ask “at what temperature?” first — that pair, not the % by itself, tells you how much water you are dealing with.
Steering back into the band
Too humid: the fix is ventilation at the right moment — when the outside air holds less water in absolute terms than the inside air, which in the cold season is nearly always. Short, wide-open airings several times a day beat any gadget, and moisture-heavy habits like drying laundry indoors deserve their own routine.
Too dry: this is mostly a heated-winter-air problem, and it fixes itself in milder weather. Meanwhile, don’t over-air heated rooms, and let everyday moisture sources (plants, air-dried dishes) do quiet work.
