Why Humid Heat Feels So Much Hotter

Your body is an evaporative cooler
Humans have exactly one serious cooling system: sweat. The trick isn’t the sweating itself — it’s the evaporation. Turning liquid sweat into vapour takes a lot of energy, and that energy is pulled straight out of your skin as heat. Sweat that evaporates cools you; sweat that just drips does nothing but soak your shirt.
Evaporation only happens if the surrounding air has room for more water. Dry air accepts your sweat eagerly and your personal AC hums along. Air already loaded with water accepts it slowly or barely at all — the machine stalls, and heat you would normally shed stays in your body. That’s the entire difference between “warm” and “suffocating” at the same temperature.
The % on your weather app won’t tell you
Relative humidity seems like the obvious number to check, but it’s a percentage of the air’s capacity at its current temperature, not an amount of water — and that capacity changes with every degree. What your body actually feels is the absolute water content of the air — grams of vapour per cubic metre. That’s the number that decides how fast your sweat can leave.
Dew point: the comfort number nobody shows you
A more intuitive stand-in for water content is the dew point: the temperature at which the air’s water would start condensing. It moves with the actual amount of water, not with the daily temperature swing, which makes it a surprisingly good comfort scale — roughly:

Here’s the practical payoff: on humid-heat days, temperature alone is a bad guide for airing. Evening air that’s two degrees cooler but wetter than your indoor air will make your home feel worse, not better — you lower the thermometer a touch and raise the mugginess, and you load your walls with moisture on top.
So the rule for opening stays double-barrelled: outside must be cooler and hold less water in absolute terms.
